Outdoor Mainstage Venue

Situated on the sloping lawn next to the lovely Portiuncula Chapel, First Folio’s outdoor mainstage is the perfect venue for Shakespeare under the stars.  It’s just a short walk down a paved path from the public parking lots to the hill facing our large raised stage.  The gates open at 6:45 PM, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy a picnic before our 8:15 start time.  Sit close to the stage and enjoy the clarity of our excellent sound system.  Not only will you see some of the best Chicago-area actors on our stage, you may also enjoy local wildlife, such as hawks, owls, deer, swifts and foxes.  Biweekly mosquito abatement is conducted to insure your comfort, and free repellent is offered at the site. Our well-lit Portapotties are cleaned often to ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience!  Our concession stand carries bottled water, soda and pre-packaged snacks, such as cookies, chips and candy bars.

The Reviews

"First Folio offers something Navy Pier can't — plenty of greenery, gentle breezes and the chance to stretch out on a blanket with family and friends while being transported to Shakespeare's otherworldly romance." - Chicago Tribune

"Shakespeare the way it ought to be!" - Chicago Sun-Times

“There is something about a summer night a grassy knoll and a juicy Shakespeare play that lures both actors and audiences. Add to the mix the handsome confines of the Mayslake Peabody Estate (a vestige of the Gilded Age, when a coal magnate could live like a king in the wilds of Oak Brook), and things get even better.”  - Hedy Weiss - Chicago Sun-Times Theater Critic

“As always, the grounds of Mayslake Peabody Estate is the perfect place to enjoy an evening under the stars.”  - The Doings
